As Memphis’s eyes swept over the screen of his phone, he felt his heart squeeze tight in his chest. For the average child, a fever was a normal occurrence, but Genie wasn’t the average child. When it came to any ailment that she had, he took it seriously because he knew not doing so could be the difference between life and death for her.

Placing the phone down, he thought back to the moment he held his baby girl in his hands for the first time. She was so small, so fragile, and so helpless that he immediately made it his one goal in life to forever keep her safe. The doctors had told him that she wouldn’t make it past three-years-old, but like the champ she was, she’d proved them all wrong. They’d told him that his daughter would never be able to speak to him—would never be able to say the word ‘daddy’. But here she was, and she could say ‘daddy’ in at least five different languages; six, if you counted sign.

Genie was a soldier, but he was her protector. And he took that responsibility very seriously. So even though Baby was telling him that everything was ‘fine,’ that wasn’t enough for him.

“Yo, Laz… I gotta hang this shit up early tonight. Like right now,” Memphis said just as Laz pulled up to their destination. They’d gotten in a new product from their connect, and even though Memphis stood to nearly triple his revenue once it hit the streets, his baby girl was more important, and this meet up could be pushed to later.

On the other end, Laz’s eyes bugged out of his skull. Not only had they been trying to work this deal for weeks, there was no telling when they would get the opportunity to meet with Xu and his crew again to make a purchase. Xu was Japanese, and the muthafucka was extremely serious about how he spent his time. He would see it as the utmost disrespect if Memphis cancelled on him this late in the game.

“This nigga gon’ think we ain’t got our funds straight if we pull out now, bruh. It took a lot to get his ass here. You know them Japanese muthafuckas already don’t like fuckin’ with niggas on any level anyways,” Laz informed him carefully. He knew that Memphis wasn’t the one to tolerate being challenged, but he felt like he wouldn’t be playing his position as a true friend in the game if he didn’t at least let his man know the consequences of his actions.

“My baby girl needs me,” was all Memphis said. Laz heard it, and even though he had no children that he knew of, he understood how much Memphis loved his daughter. Still, he had to try and break through to him one last time.

“I understand, bruh. This meeting won’t take too long. And the whole reason for this deal is so that we can set shit in place so that you can step out of the game for good.
